Pets vs. Your Carpet

Removing pet stains from carpets is never a good time. However, cleaning is inevitable if your dog or cat spends the majority of his time indoors. Accidents happen and when they do timing is everything. The key to salvaging your carpet from pet feces or urine is to act quickly and use effective cleaners. As soon as you spot a pet stain reach for rags or absorbent paper towels to soak or wipe up the mess. The longer you let animal urine or feces sit on carpeting the worse the smell gets.

If you are dealing primarily with urine stains, then soak up as much of the liquid as possible before spraying on a reliable carpet cleaner, such as Woolite Spot and Stain Carpet Cleaner. If you prefer using a homemade remedy, then mix a solution of half white vinegar and half warm water and apply it to the soiled carpet. Next, work the mixture into the carpet with a scrub brush. If the area is really wet, then blot it cotton rags or several layers of paper towels or vacuum the area to remove excess moisture. The next step is to apply a liberal amount of baking soda to the damp carpet. For serious stains, mix the baking soda with a half a cup of three-percent hydrogen peroxide and a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Scrub the mixture into the carpet with a brush, allow the area to dry completely, and then vacuum it up.

If you are dealing with feces stains, you will need to remove as much of the poop as possible before treating the carpet. If the feces is moist you might have to gently scrape at the stain. Just be careful not to spread it into the carpet. Once the poop is gone, treat the stain with a reputable carpet cleaner, such as Spot Shot Carpet Stain Remover or Stain-X Carpet Stain Remover. Another option is to apply a heavy-duty laundry stain remover, such as OxiClean Max Force Laundry Stain Remover to the carpet stain. Allow the carpet cleaner to penetrate the feces stain, and then scrub it with a soft brush soaked in warm soapy water. Use a dry cloth to absorb as much of the moisture as possible. Then, sprinkle the area with a generous amount of baking soda and allow to sit overnight. In the morning vacuum up the remaining baking soda, and the stain should be gone.
