In order to get great shots of your kids, you need to be on their level. Photos look better when they are taken at the same level as the subject. Since kids are short, you’ll need to bend or kneel down to take photos of them.
If your child is playing with cars on the floor, you’ll get a better shot if you kneel down and snap the shot in front of him. Also, keep in mind:
*Closer is better: Your subject should take up the majority of the frame. Move in so that you don’t have a lot of distracting items or space in the background.
*Use natural light when possible: If you are not familiar with all of the lighting rules of photography, try to remember to use natural light whenever possible. It is harder to compensate for artificial light. Take photos outdoors or open doors or windows when taking photos inside.
*Take your time: In order to get the best photos of your kids, take your time and be patient. The best photos are often snapped when the subject is unaware that the camera is aimed at him. Watch your child and be ready to snap your photo when you see an opportunity present itself.
*Minimize the use of props: Props are okay in photos, but should be kept to a minimum. If there are too many items in the photo, it will take away from the subject. For example, if you want a photo of your child playing baseball, frame it with just your child holding the ball. If you try to capture the ball, bat, base and other players in the background, you distract from your primary subject.
Always remember, photography is an art and you are the artist. You want to put your own creative touch on your photos. Photographing your child is important and you want to capture his or her most memorable moments.
