In previous blogs I discussed the fine art of matting pictures. I am an advocate of mats as I feel they help ordinary photos take on a professional quality. I mentioned that there are three basic tips you should keep in mind when choosing the perfect mat for your frame: color, quality and size.
In regards to the subject of size I wanted to include one more tip: If you are framing an extra large picture or if the focal point of your photo is centered near the bottom, consider “weighting” your mat by opting for a wider border across the bottom. In other words, select a mat that’s a little wider on the bottom than on the top and sides. Doing so will help balance a heavy piece, and therefore make it easier on the eyes.
Another way that you can help balance out heavier images is to hang two photos of the same size next to each other on the wall. I would suggest having the mats cut smaller on the inside, so the pieces appear connected when hung together. The wider you weight your mats, the more dramatic your photo will look hanging on the wall.
Finally, in a previous blog I reviewed Casio’s new EXILIM Hi-ZOOM EX-V7. It is touted as “the world’s slimmest digital camera with a 7X optical zoom lens” and offers a bevy of features. However, I seem to have overlooked one of the most popular—-the fact that the camera comes with an eBay Best Shot mode.
The feature is exclusive to the Casio EXILIM line of digital cameras. Basically, the feature takes photos at a size that is image optimized for display on the Internet auction site. Which means you can easily create photos for selling items on eBay. The eBay Best Shot mode also includes Auto Macro, an ideal setting for capturing images of small items such as jewelry. The camera automatically adjusts the focus from capturing fine details in close up shots to documenting large items from a distance.
