After a thirty minute drive in the glorious autumn weather, surrounded by the beauty of fall, we arrived at our destination: The Orchard and Pumpkin Patch. My two children, my little sister, and I met my other sister (she is of course my little sister’s older sister too), her husband, and their daughter. The orchard was very busy with only a week to go before Halloween and subsequently “Beggars Night” (something we do not celebrate with trick or treating). There were lots of children with their parents scoping out the pumpkin patch. After I got the stroller out of the car and set up (it is a very heavy, very spendy double stroller … it is a love hate relationship) and my sleeping daughter and wallet loaded, we all slowly made our way to the pumpkin patch. Both my three year old son and my sister’s one year old daughter were very excited to go into the pumpkin patch. As we crossed the threshold in the pumpkin patch, we realized that one of our friends from college (whose parents own the orchard) was weighing and selling the pumpkins. We talked to him for a few minutes and inquired where the sugar pumpkins were located in the large pumpkin patch. He pointed us to their location and we entered the pumpkin patch. My son had a running start and quickly starting going for the biggest pumpkin he could find. He was a little disappointed when I told him that we were not going to get a big jack o’lantern pumpkin. Once I told him that we were going to get a small sugar pumpkin for making pumpkin pies, his joy and excitement quickly returned. He then ran to find the smallest pumpkin he could find (in his estimation). With my daughter still asleep in the stroller, my sister and I selected two very round, very orange sugar pumpkins (apparently sugar pumpkins are darker orange than jack o’lantern pumpkins), during which time my daughter woke up and was quickly rescued by my little sister. After selecting my sugar pumpkin and safely placing it in the stroller, I decided to get two, one for my son and one for my daughter. In the meantime, my son, brother-in-law, and niece were playing a game of chase/hide and seek in the pumpkin patch. We emerged from the pumpkin patch a few minutes later to have our pumpkins weighted for payment. My son was very pleased with his sugar pumpkin and proudly carried it to the car!
