Picking The Perfect Valentine’s Day Movie

Valentine’s Day is almost here. In previous blogs I’ve given you unique gift ideas, affordable gift ideas, over-the-top gift ideas, and simple gift ideas—so basically you have no excuse not to be prepared tomorrow.

For those of you who rather not shower your sweetheart with presents, but rather give him or her the gift of your presence, this blog may come in handy. There is nothing wrong about spending Valentine’s at home. A quiet romantic dinner for two is nothing to complain about (nor is a rousing dinner with five kids over a heart-shaped pepperoni pizza). Whether you will be enjoying the former or the latter dinner date, you may want to end the night with a romantic movie for two.

The following are my picks (minus “My Bloody Valentine”) for flicks that help capture the essence of Valentine’s Day:

Casablanca: Who doesn’t love this Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman romantic masterpiece? It’s a heart breaker filled with memorable lines. (Who doesn’t remember their last goodbye?) Don’t want to soak your sweetie with tears? Then consider opting for another Bogie classic “The African Queen.” It features his riverboat romance with Katherine Hepburn.

Four Weddings and a Funeral: You can’t spend Valentine’s Day without a romantic comedy, right? The film stars Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell and the relationship that blossoms between the two as they journey down a road that leads them to–four weddings and a funeral. It’s charming and funny… and you may not have to twist your guy’s arm to watch it.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding: If you are one of those people I was referring to earlier–romantic dinner = five kids and a heart shaped pizza—then this is the movie for you. It’s a love day flick good for the whole family… after all; it features an entire family of Greeks who “aid” one of their own as she prepares to wed an “outsider.” Nia Vardalos wrote and stars in this funny romantic tale that will make you appreciate your own family.

Titanic: A steamy romance between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet set onboard a legendary ship headed for disaster—what more could you ask for on Valentine’s Day? Sure, it has a tearful end to it, but before you get there you are treated to some amazing special effects.

The Wedding Singer: This movie will have you in tears too, but they’ll be ones that come from uncontrollable laughter. Adam Sandler stars as the romantic “leading man” (a wedding singer) who pines for the affection of a waitress (Drew Barrymore) who’s on the verge of marrying a cad. If you loved the 1980s, you’ll get a kick reliving some of the era’s unforgettable hair and fashion statements.

When Harry Met Sally: I’ve seen this movie at least 20 times and never tire of it. This romantic tale asks the burning question: “Can a man and woman have sex and still be friends?” Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan spend the movie trying to answer the query and will crack you up doing so. This movie is filled with unforgettable lines (“I’ll have what she’s having.”) and hilarious scenes that help make it one of the best romantic comedies ever. Wouldn’t you agree?

What are some of your favorite romantic movies?
