Whenever I am asked to list my favorite hobby I can never decide whether to answer “eating” or “traveling.” I love to do both. I think that’s why I love picnics, because I get to combine both my passions. There’s nothing like traveling to a national park (or one right in your own neighborhood) and spreading out a feast to share with friends and family members. You can plan a picnic to celebrate a special occasion or for no other reason than to take advantage of a beautiful summer day.
Of course, a picnic (no matter what the size) takes planning. I find it helps to create a checklist of items so you don’t forget the essentials. (Nothing can spoil a picnic faster than getting your meal spread out and realizing you forgot to pack the plates and utensils.) Here are some items you shouldn’t forget (I didn’t include the food and beverages–I figure THAT you’ll remember):
· Picnic blanket or tablecloth—I use a “Neat Sheet,” which is part blanket, part tablecloth. It is lightweight, water resistant, machine washable, and folds up in a snap.
· Extra ice or ice packs for the cooler
· Food storage containers
· Pillows—great to sit on during your meal and nice to place your head on when you feel that post-picnic nap coming on.
· Antibacterial gel or “Wet Ones” (moist towelettes). I also like to bring along some SHOUT wipes (just in case—with a 2-year-old spills are inevitable).
· Insect repellent
· Sunscreen
· Umbrella—helps to block the sun or protect you in case Mother Nature rains on your picnic.
· Utensils/plates/cups
· Napkins—I just pack a paper towel roll—it’s easier than having to run after individual napkins that often get picked up and tossed around every time the wind blows.
· Condiments
· Bottle opener/corkscrew
· Trash bags—instead of walking back and forth to the nearest trash can, just throw all of your garbage into your own bag and toss it into the rubbish bin on your way back to the car.
In Picnics 201, I’ll have tips on what to remember when you are having a picnic in a place other than your backyard.
