Pilates for Dummies – DVD Review

Pilates Workout for Dummies is a great exercise DVD for beginners and novice students of Pilates. I have never been a fan of Pilates, it’s always seemed ‘too’ hard even when I was in good physical shape, however the basic workout is presented in a very patient manner that I enjoyed. The instructor Michele Dozois explains and demonstrates different mat exercises.

I found myself actually enjoying the workout in Pilates as she cautioned against common mistakes and explained how to position the body effectively. The intermediate workout varies from the beginning workout as it picks up the pace.

Pilates is all about building core strength. It is a very tough workout and while similar to yoga, it uses different techniques to achieve stronger muscles with better endurance. The basics behind Pilates are that it will help a purse to sculpt their muscles and body shape. They can actually look, as they would want to. They manage this by developing longer, leaner muscles.

It’s advertised as something everyone can do, but I’ve never found it comfortable until trying out this DVD. Perhaps it was a lack of understanding in the positions or lack of a good explanation. Dozois’ explanations are patient and not remotely patronizing. She walks you through each part of the technique and focuses you on the language and posture.

For beginners interested in trying out Pilates for the first time, this is a great investment. If you’ve never cared for Pilates and feel like trying it out again, you may change your mind. I did.
