Fall and winter are great times to plan your garden for next year. The leaves have fallen and the greenery is gone, giving you an almost blank slate on which to plan your garden. It is also a less busy time for outdoor work, as the planting, weeding, trimming, cutting, mowing and harvesting are done for the time being. You can sit back and pour through your books and catalogues, in the comfort of a warm home.
Planning a garden in the cool or cold weather also gives you a good perspective on what you really want. You have some months to plan, design and redesign before the groundwork and planting will be done. You can think about color, texture and other design elements of your garden. You can also plan out area of interest and garden features.
Take the time to really do your research. of course this could involve books and gardening videos, but you can also take advantage of the less busy times to ask an expert some questions.
Another great reason to start planning now, is the fact that there are still garden equipment, tools and elements in the store at deep discounts. Go ahead and browse for the bargains. Who know, you might even be inspired by a gazing ball, a garden ornament or even some colored pebbles that are left over from the summer sales.
I like the idea of planning out a garden in the fall and the winter. As someone who is very new to gardening, the time will give me a chance to take it slow and really get prepared for what I want to do. One type of garden that I would enjoy starting with is a vegetable garden. But I will need to select a site, figure out fencing to protect it from native animals, and select the plants and rotation schedule.
