I am in the midst of planning a baby shower for my younger sister. Perhaps this is an odd thing to write about for a “pregnancy blog” but since I am also pregnant, I have found that pregnancy also affects one’s ability to plan a baby shower.
My sister and I were always close growing up especially in junior high and high school and we remained close through college, but for the past five years we have lived more than just miles apart. Now that my husband and I have finally moved back to our home town, my sister and her husband are living a good ten hours away … so we still live miles apart.
Things aren’t how we imagined: living near each other, sharing maternity clothes on a daily basis, doing prenatal Pilate’s together etc. Things are different now and planning a huge baby shower was never what I had in mind (I imagined something more intimate and elaborate). But things are what they are and I am planning a huge baby shower so there is the need to keep things simple.
Once I decided on a simple floral theme, I now need to decide how exactly to incorporate that theme into the event itself. I know that we will have a few floral arrangements but I really want to make the dessert a focal point. Desserts are my area of expertise, I have been baking since the age of eight. Still I don’t want to do something too elaborate because I have more than just the dessert to worry about. So I settled on making cupcakes with a white chocolate ganache icing adorned with candied edible flowers and pink sugar crystals. The cupcakes will be arranged on a three tiered cupcake stand so that it doubles as a centerpiece for the shower.
