Planning a Frugal Date Night

With our soaring utility bills, money is tight these days and it’s hard to justify frivolous spending. We’re also trying to put money away for a rainy day, so to speak – our next big family vacation. So, we’re limited on the expendable funds that we have – but we still want to be able to enjoy our date nights that we plan for. Where once upon a time we went out to dinner or to a movie or both, now we’ve found ways to still get our quality time and togetherness, without spending a lot of extra money.

  • Friday nights are great because we’re both science fiction fans and we’ll record shows during the week including Eureka, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis to watch
  • We often prepare a late supper after the midget has gone to bed and settle in comfortably in the living room to watch our shows, using the commercials to compare notes and chat
  • Board games are fun too as well as cards, we enjoy setting up a variety of games, including some old classics like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit and a very old Dark Tower – hilarity often ensues as we try to remember the rules
  • Book store trips, while some may not consider this a date per say, we’ve always enjoyed our ventures to the bookstore. We pick up coffee for me and wander around, looking for the latest releases and whatever catches our eye, our daughter enjoys this too
  • Backyard chat – Weather permitting, we’ll settle in on the back porch and share drinks and conversation as the sun sets and the moon rises – we have a goal of building a deck onto the back of the house and picking up a telescope for evenings like this as well
