Planning an Autumn Wedding?

Autumn is a beautiful time to host or hold a wedding. The colors are rich and distinct. It can be associated with the harvest and with the bounty collected after a rich summer. Associating the bounty, the harvest and even the rituals of thanks giving into a wedding ceremony is a charming devotional to the love shared between a couple.

If you are planning an autumn wedding, here are some tips to help you out:

  • If your wedding is going to be outdoors, you need to have a good idea of the type of weather to expect – from damp and rainy to cool and crisp so that you can advise your guests accordingly and plan for a sheltered spot
  • Decide on the time of day for the wedding because that can help you to determine whether or not you want a formal or informal wedding and whether you want to suggest formal or informal wear for your guests – in some cases, the bridal party may be formally dressed while the guests are urged to be informal
  • Fall colors are a great way to decorate the ceremony and reception venue as well as help you decide on colors for the bridesmaids and more: some of the best colors are oranges, yellows, russet reds, moss greens and all shades of brown
  • When picking out fabrics for the dresses, lean towards silk or light wools because they breath well, but they are comfortable indoors and out
  • Late Autumn weddings may require wraps for the bridesmaids and a warm cloak for the bride – rather than a veil – a hooded cloak is pretty lovely
  • Classic lines are the best for Autumn weddings, think simple and stately – letting the fall colors themselves be the decorative rather than a heavily embroidered or pearled look
  • Serve classic harvest dishes at the reception – roasted turkey, maize, corn, squash and sweet potatoes – fruit dishes are very popular especially apples
  • If the wedding is in late autumn, when the nights are much cooler – warm drinks from hot chocolate to spiced or mulled wine can be a really charming addition to the reception atmosphere —

There are a lot of possibilities we can explore with the autumn wedding no matter what part of the country you are from. We’ll explore more of these ideas over the next couple of months, including the Halloween wedding and I’ve attended a couple of those and they can be a great deal of fun! Remember, while you plan a wedding – you should be basing the wedding plans off your preferences as a couple – and not just on the time of year and if Autumn doesn’t appeal to you, then plan for a wedding in another season or with another theme – just because your wedding takes place in Autumn doesn’t mean you have to plan an Autumn theme.
