Planning for a New Year

The New Year is upon us and it is time to re-evaluate our homeschools. If you follow the traditional calendar then you have around five to six months left of school. Start the year off right by determining what needs to be changed to make the most of the last part of the school year. As homeschoolers we have the ability to be flexible and cut out what doesn’t work while keeping what does. Homeschoolers need to constantly evaluate the needs of our children and our homeschool. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you come off of winter break and get ready to start a new year.

Is my schedule working?

Before putting in one more day decide if the schedule you are currently following is working. What you scoff knowing that you do not follow your schedule? That must mean it is not working and needs to be adjusted. What changes are you constantly making to fit it all in? Restructure your schedule to reflect your life and your family’s needs.

Is my curriculum working for my children?

Curriculum changes are a double edged sword. One on hand the change is welcomed while on the other hand you fear the change will set you back for a bit. Don’t fear change. Fear being stagnant in your homeschool. If something is not working simply change it. Yes, it can be that easy. Determining what to change it to may be a bit of work but you should know what you are looking for and what doesn’t work by now. It will make the decision process easier. Consult sites online and Facebook pages and blogs for guidance.

What activities can I add or cut out?

Don’t start the year overscheduled. Conversely, you do not want to cut out so much that your children miss out on fun activities, sports, and time with other children. Determine which activities are actually a hindrance to your time and family life. Switch those for activities that accommodate your homeschool and lives better.

It is your homeschool. Do it your way. Make that your New Year’s homeschool resolution.
