Play Ball!

A Good Friday storm dumped more than 15 inches of snow on Milwaukee (just south of us), yet residents there are remarkably undeterred. They whipped out their snow blowers and are anxiously waiting for the opening day of the regular baseball season, which takes place on Sunday.

If you are a fan of the national pastime and can’t wait to crisscross the country to watch your favorite team try to earn a place in the World Series then you might be interested in knowing that several major hotels are making it easier for you to do so.

Lodgings in most Major League Baseball cities are currently offering discounts or special travel packages to help budget conscious baseball fans cheer on the boys of summer.

Some packages come with restrictions. For example, a few I reviewed offer savings only if you buy game tickets. Others require advance payment or have a strict cancellation policy.

Still, if you are a die-hard baseball fan most of the deals do offer exceptional ways to save money.

For instance:

ST. LOUIS

The Sheraton St. Louis City Center Hotel & Suites is offering fans a great deal on April 6th, when the hometown Cardinals host the Washington Nationals. For $159 you’ll receive a room with a king-size bed and a queen-size sofa bed, free parking, continental breakfast for two and free transportation to and from the game. The same room typically costs $189; hotel parking ordinarily costs $17, and continental breakfast for two is $20, so taking advantage of the baseball package can save at least $67 for a single night.

The Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark has a deal that offers a $20 savings when you book a room and buy tickets through the hotel plus they throw in a Cardinals souvenir.

TEXAS

In the Lone Star State, the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau is offering Texas Rangers packages at 16 area hotels. For example, on April 30th you can get a room at the Sheraton Arlington and two lower reserved seats for the Rangers game against the Kansas City Royals for $242.67, including taxes. That’s a $60.08 savings. The package also comes with two tickets for the Legends of the Game Baseball Museum — worth $24 — and discount shopping and dining coupons.

BOSTON

If you want to get your hands on sold-out Red Sox tickets consider booking a room at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. It has plenty of baseball packages that include tickets. Guests who take advantage of the hotel’s Grand Slam package will get a two-night stay, two tickets and daily breakfast for two for $642.50.
