Play Dough Recipes

Preschoolers love to get creative with play dough. They get so creative that in no time you have nothing but brown play dough from all the mixing, pounding, and creating. As a mom who gets tired of replacing brown play dough with original colors, I have resigned to making my own from time to time. The wonderful thing about making your own is you already have most of the ingredients right in your kitchen. Making your own can extend the fun and lesson if you allow your child to help by teaching following directions, orderliness, and creativity.

Scented Play Dough

1 package of sugar free gelatin; .3 oz size (any flavor)

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

4 tablespoons cream of tartar

2 cups boiling water

2 tablespoons cooking oil

Mix dry ingredients together in pot. Add boiling water and cooking oil. Stir over medium heat until it forms a ball. Let cool. Keep in air tight container in refrigerator when not playing with it.

Chocolate Scented Play Dough (Do NOT eat)

1 1/4 cups flour

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup salt

1/2 tablespoon cream of tartar

1/2 tablespoon cooking oil

1 cup boiling water.

Mix flour, cocoa powder, salt, and cream of tartar together. Add cooking oil and boiling water to mixture. Stir quickly and mix well. Cook over low heat until dough forms a ball. When cool, hand mix. Store in airtight container.

Peanut Butter Play Dough

3 1/2 cups peanut butter

4 cups powdered sugar

3 1/2 cups honey

4 cups powdered milk

chocolate chips (optional)

Mix the ingredients. Put mixture in a plastic bag and place in refrigerator. You may divide it up first if you wish. Then have the kids mold it and have fun. Use wax paper to over your play surface. Decorate with chocolate chips and eat! Yes, this is edible play dough.

Kool Aid Play Dough

2 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup salt

2 (4 g) packages unsweetened Kool-Aid powdered drink mix

2 cups boiling water

3 tablespoons oil

Mix flour, salt, Kool-Aid until blended. Add oil to boiling water, mix with spoon until cool enough to knead. Continue kneading until color is blended. Store in air tight bag or container in the refrigerator.
