PlayStation 3 Soon Available

Good news for those of you who are still trying to get your hands on a Sony Play Station 3.

A top executive for Sony Computer Entertainment America announced on Tuesday that Sony is on track to ship two million PS3 gaming consoles to North American stores by the end of March, expecting to completely ease retail shortages by May.

The PS3, which costs between $500 and $600 depending on your choice of features, has been a red hot commodity since it’s release on November 17, 2006. Gamers stood in line across the country, some waiting for days, just to be the first to own the new gaming system. The PS3 features a hard drive that stores game data and music, and is equipped to support CR-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats, as well as Sony’s Blu-ray HD technology. Additionally, there are available slots for Memory Stick Duo, SD, and compact flash memory, as well as support for a detachable 2.5 – inch HDD.

The system is backward compatible all the way to the original PlayStation.

Jack Tretton, Chief Executive Officer of Sony stated, “April or May is when we feel like we’re going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there. Our goal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves … if we have empty shelves, that’s one less consumer who could have bought a PlayStation 3.”

The PS3 has been heralded the “supercomputer for computer entertainment,” with 244,000 consoles having been sold as of January.

Do you currently own, or plan to purchase a PS3? What do you think of it? Is the product worth the hefty price tag?
