Poetry in Motion

left

Do you often find yourself working harder on gift scrapbooks than ones you plan to keep for yourself? I force myself to be a more creative when crafting memory albums for others. Sadly, that’s why I don’t have many scrapbook layouts featuring personalized poems or detailed journaling blocks. Nine times out of ten, I neglect to take the time to include personal writings in my scrapbooks, even though they don’t require a ton of time or energy to complete.

Many scrappers automatically swear off writing their own prose to add to scrapbook page designs. However, these one-of-a-kind verses are often a cinch to craft even if you don’t have prior experience in the world of poetry writing. I am guilty as charged, but if you really think about it, a poem is simply a way to convey the specialness of an event. It doesn’t have to be grand or ostentatious; rather, it can be simple and fun.

One of my favorite types of poems to add to a scrapbook layout is an ABC poem. It is pretty self explanatory, as you are simply using the alphabet as the impetus for the prose. For example, if you were to include an ABC poem on a preschool graduation layout it could go something like this:

A is for the apple I brought my teacher

B is for the bright gold stars I earned each day

C is for coloring with crayons

D is for drawing and decorating pumpkins on Halloween

ABC poems are easy to customize and don’t require a ton of creativity to pull off.

Another easy option is the haiku. The popular Japanese poetry consists of 17 syllables divided among three lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables. Haiku is traditionally written about nature, but you can take creative license when writing one to add to scrapbook layout. The other bonus with this type of poem is that the words don’t have to rhyme; rather, the goal is to convey a certain mood or emotion.
