Politics and the LDS Church

I think that it is important to address the church and politics. Mitt Romney, who is running for president, is LDS. This has brought a lot of media attention to the church. A lot of the attention has been good since it has allowed the church and its members to address common misconceptions. One thing that it is important to realize is that the church is neutral when it comes to politics.

The LDS church does not promote specific candidates. In fact each election period, each bishop will read a letter, which states the fact that the church is neutral in the political arena. The church does encourage its members to vote and be active in the political process, but it does not choose a candidate or a political party for members to support.

I am grateful that the church’s official policy encourages us to make our own choices, and to act according to how we see best. It is important for others in the nation to understand this about the church and its members. It can be difficult for members of the church who run for public office, since many people mistakenly believe that the church would control their decisions and policies.

While being LDS does affect your personal values, it does not control your political views and stances. So while I may be somewhere between a Democrat and a Republican depending on the issue I am discussing, I am proud to say that I have a LDS grandmother who is a staunch Democrat and my LDS father who is a staunch Republican. Politics are rarely discussed at family gatherings, because of the heated discussions and arguments.

As with every election, I am going to make my choice based on the candidate that best fits my beliefs on the issues that matter to me the most. These issues are the ones that define my most basic and deepest beliefs. I am grateful to live in a country that affords me this privilege. I am grateful for the opportunity I have to let my voice be heard.
