What did your kids have for breakfast this morning? If you’re like most of the parents in a poll conducted by the Family Education Network, they probably had cereal, milk and juice. According to the poll, 51% of parents say that cereal, milk and juice constitutes a typical breakfast at their house.
Okay, I admit, I’m in that 51%, also. I have tried and tried again to get Tyler to eat a variety of food but most days he wants cereal. So that’s exactly what he gets. I figure it’s better than sending him out without anything to eat, which is exactly what would happen if I tried to force him to eat a nice hot bowl of grits or oatmeal, for instance. We don’t have a dog to feed his un-wanted food to, but he definitely sneaks and feeds the trashcan whenever I give him something that he does not like.
Like a lot of kids his food preferences changes from week to week (day to day even). Things that he absolutely loved today will be the yucky food he won’t take a bite of tomorrow. At one time all he wanted for breakfast was Sugar Smacks, Corn Pops and and Frosted Flakes . Now he’s not so picky. I buy the variety pack and he’ll what’s available. Then there was the time when all he wanted was toaster pastries. From there he moved on to jelly sandwiches. And I can’t forget his recent (and surprising) egg phase. No matter what he has for breakfast, I make sure he has a glass of orange or apple juice with it. If it’s cold, he has hot chocolate but, hey we live in the south, so it’s never really “hot-chocolate cold”.
How did the rest of the parents respond?
17%— “Who has time for breakfast?”
20%–“Anything ready in a minute or less.”
9%– “A hot, well-balanced meal.”
3%– “Yuck! Cold pizza and leftovers.”
How about you, what’s a typical breakfast for your kids?
