Pooh’s Grand Adventure: the Search for Christopher Robin (1997)

Everyone has to grow up sometime, even Christopher Robin. He’s had an innocent and happy childhood, playing with all his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, but now something else is going to be taking up his time. Yes, it’s time for Christopher Robin to go to school. He spends one last day gallivanting around with Winnie the Pooh, and he tries to tell his bear buddy that he won’t be as available any more, but it’s hard to break the news.

When Pooh wakes up the next morning, he finds a honey pot with his name on it, and a note. But honey gets spilled on the note, making it hard to read, and even the learned Owl can’t quite make it out. As near as he can tell, Christopher Robin has gone to a place called Skull, and needs to be rescued. Who else to do the job but the intrepid Winnie the Pooh?

Setting off with him are all the friends from the Wood. With a map conjured up by Owl, they head out, feeling afraid, but determined. If Christopher Robin needs them, they will go! Ringing in Pooh’s ears is the admonition Christopher gave him not too long ago: “You’re braver than you think.” But Pooh’s poor fluffy brain keeps messing it up, and he’s not sure he’s up to the task.

The friends have many scary adventures on their journey, most of them magnified by their imaginations. But they aren’t able to find Christopher, and feel like failures, until they discover he’s come home on his own. It turns out he didn’t go to Skull; he went to school, and he’s home until the next morning.

While this Winnie the Pooh film isn’t as endearing as the original, it is still very cute and enjoyable. Tigger is his usual bouncy self and makes everything lighthearted, and the suspense is just right. Try this one out with your A. A. Milne fan.
