If you want to save money on glass cleaner, read this article!
As you know from following this blog, I’ve written about the wonders of vinegar for cleaning glass. It is economical and does not contain any harsh chemicals. There is so much concern today for fumes and VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). Some studies have found that these types of cleaners can cause respiratory problems and skin problems. I also like vinegar because it is one of those products that have multiple uses, which is really nice. There is less clutter and less expense.
However, I do recognize that not everyone enjoys using vinegar. Whether it is the smell of vinegar or just the idea of using it, some folks just love to use their glass cleaners. There is nothing wrong with that. I used glass cleaner religiously when we were selling our house, going through gallons of it to make sure the bathroom and kitchen were always shiny. Glass cleaner is especially nice for shining up faucets and metal fixtures.
If you want a frugal glass cleaner, here is a thrifty tip. Instead of buying Windex or a Windex-type cleaner, purchase a big bottle of windshield washer fluid. It is a little weaker than standard household glass cleaner, but it works well on the day to day jobs. for instance, how much chemical cleaning do you really need on a mirror that has a little dust or a window with one smudge?
An added benefit to using windshield washer fluid is that it does not contain ammonia, so you aren’t dealing with the harsh fumes.
Windshield washer fluid is currently priced at around 89 to 99 cents a gallon. Compare that to Windex. The lowest price I could find is at Walmart at @ 3.79 for 26 ounces. Other stores priced the same size Windex for $3.99 or higher.
