How can you get your lettuce nice and clean without investing in the retail cost of a salad spinner? Here is an idea that works just as well, and a couple of tips on how you can get that spinner for less, if you really want one.
We are on our second salad spinner. Both were gifts from my mother-in-law, who wanted to make sure that our kitchen had this useful tool. The first one had a sort of belt that you pulled in order to spin the salad. That didn’t last ling at all. The replacement version has a button that you can pump to make the salad spin–much more economical, since it has held up for several years now.
Still, a salad spinner isn’t something that I might normally buy myself, since it is one of those one-use kitchen tools. And while it does an amazing job of getting salad greens clean and dry, I used to just blot them on a cloth kitchen towel.
You can actually use this little trick to make the towel do a better job. Here is how you do it. First rinse and drain your salad greens using a colander or strainer. Next, roll those greens in a clean kitchen towel. Use one hand to grab both ends of the towel. Head outside or somewhere you don’t mind some water getting on the floor. Rapidly spin the towel.
If that seems like too much effort for you, then look for salad spinners at your local garage sales and thrift stores. Rummage sales are a particularly good source of these salad spinners. They are often given as gifts and then used once or twice or not at all.
If you want a new salad spinner, look online and compare prices. Then use coupon codes to get an extra percentage off. You may find sales and deals on these during the late summer.
