Pop Culture Potpourri–Alex Trebek Hospitalized and Gwen Stefani to the Rescue

Answer: He suffered a minor heart attack.

Question: What happened to “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek?

The 67-year-old longtime game show host gave his family quite a scare Monday night. Trebek reportedly felt pains in his chest and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where doctors discovered he had a minor heart attack.

According to Trebek’s rep, the Canadian-born celebrity will remain in the hospital for a couple more days for tests and observation.

In a statement released by “Jeopardy” producers Trebek was said to be “resting comfortably in a Los Angeles hospital, and he will be back in the studio for the next scheduled tapings in January.”

This isn’t the first time Trebek’s fans have gotten word that the Emmy-winning game show host had been spared serious harm. In 2004 the “Jeopardy” host fell asleep at the wheel of his car, sideswiped a string of mailboxes and wound up in a ditch, but remarkably he escaped with just minor injuries.

GWEN STEFANI TO THE RESCUE

It’s not everyday that songstress Gwen Stefani makes headlines outside of the worlds of music and fashion. But, today the blonde beauty is being hailed for taking a detour from the glitz and glam of showbiz into the world of charity.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Stefani just started a college-scholarship fund for students affected by this fall’s California wildfires, which ripped through the southern part of the state and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents.

“When I heard about the devastation of the fires, at first I felt I should cancel my [San Diego] show out of respect,” the 38-year-old singer said in a statement. “But then it occurred to me there might be a more useful solution.”

The solution: create the Gwen Stefani After-the-Fires Scholarship, which will benefit students who lost their homes or sources of income in the fires.

The scholarship program is still in the developmental phase and details of the fund are still being worked out. In addition to the scholarships, Stefani also reportedly donated about $160,000 in proceeds from her October concert in San Diego to the San Diego Foundation fire-relief fund.
