Pop Culture Potpourri: Death Of A Fashion Icon and Fashionable Vegetarians

DEATH OF A FASHION ICON

I’ve been wearing her designs since high school so it was with great sadness that I learned legendary fashionista Liz Claiborne died yesterday. According news reports, Claiborne had been battling cancer and died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Tuesday. She was 78.

Claiborne was born in Brussels, but immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in New Orleans. According to the Claiborne website, the designer founded her namesake company with husband Art Ortenberg in 1976 and retired in 1989.

That was around the time when I started wearing her clothes to work (my first television job). These days I live near a Liz Claiborne outlet and while I now work out of my home I still buy all my wallets and handbags from the store. In fact, I just got a new Liz Claiborne purse for Mother’s Day. Sigh. I will look at it with a bit more fondness now that the woman behind the name on the label has passed.

FASHIONABLE VEGETARIANS

Aren’t all vegetarians fashionable? Most of the vegetarians I know are svelte enough to make any outfit look incredible. How about a sexy vegetarian? Do you know anyone who fits that bill?

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals do. According to a PETA run contest, Carrie Underwood and Kevin Eubanks are among the “world’s sexiest vegetarians.”

Underwood, the Grammy-winning country singer, won the title in 2005. But Eubanks, the leader of NBC’s “Tonight Show” band, is a new hottie in the eyes of the meatless. (For the record Eubanks got help from Jay Leno, who encouraged viewers to vote for Eubanks.)

Runners-up in the contest included Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Bell, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Jared Leto. Previous winners also include Natalie Portman, Andre 3000, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Shania Twain, Tobey Maguire, Lauren Bush, Josh Hartnett and Alicia Silverstone.
