Pop Culture Potpourri–Ebay No-No and Star Tells Students to Just Say No

EBAY NO-NO

They insist it was a joke, but police and millions of Internet users around the world aren’t laughing one bit.

Sad but true; according to police near Berlin, Germany a young couple has been taken into custody for allegedly trying to sell their baby on eBay.

The 7-month-old boy is now in custody and his parents are behind bars after they reportedly posted an ad on eBay offering to sell the child for one euro, which is the equivalent of $1.57.

While the child remains in the care of youth services authorities are investigating the case and could possibly charge the baby’s 23-yar-old mother and 24-year-old father with child trafficking.

The eBay ad featuring the infant read: “Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches (70 cm) long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller.”

Can you imagine if you saw that posted on eBay?

Luckily, several astute eBay users contacted managers of the popular online auction site who in turn deleted the post and assisted police in tracking down the parents.

Police say that several other people who saw the ad called them as well.

Ebay managers say the post was up for nearly three hours before they were informed about its contents. No offers were made for the boy in that time.

At least some people were using their brains.

STAR TELLS STUDENTS TO JUST SAY NO

Oscar-winner Jessica Lange spent her holiday weekend trying to convince college students to just say no… to the war.

Lange bashed the Bush administration and denounced the war in Iraq during a commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College Friday night.

And she was applauded for it.

The “Tootsie” star (whose 22-year-old daughter was among the graduating seniors) got a standing ovation following her public plea calling on students to take a stand against the current war of terror.

Students at the small liberal arts college cheered and clapped as Lange compared the current conflict in the Middle East with the Vietnam War.

“We are living in an America that, in the last seven and a half years, has waged an unnecessary war, established prison camps, condoned torture, employed corporate armies, eliminated the right of habeas corpus, practiced extraordinary rendition, and believe me, this is only a partial list,” Lange said.

Lange also implored the graduates to commit themselves to the “pursuit of peace” and to chart a new path for the country.
