Pop Culture Potpourri: House Parts For Sale and Welcome To The Big House

HOUSE PARTS FOR SALE

Good news for all of you Grateful Dead fans who missed out on the chance to bid on Jerry Garcia’s toilet. The man who bought the deceased guitarist’s house more than a decade ago is offering you a chance to own everything in the home, including the kitchen sink.

Last year David Koltys sold Garcia’s toilet and other fixtures and donated the money to charity. Now he’s at it again. This time Koltys is offering up the home’s kitchen sink, Jacuzzi, stereo speakers and several other items.

If you want to add a few of the items to your own home, be prepared to dig deep. Garcia’s toilet fetched $2,500 at auction last year. This year’s goods will be sold on eBay beginning August 12th.

Similar to last year’s auction, the proceeds from this one will benefit the Sophia Foundation, a San Francisco Bay area nonprofit that aids children and families during marital separations and divorces.

“This charity auction allows me to combine my interest in protecting and helping these families and my love for Jerry Garcia’s music,” said Koltys, who is the foundation’s chairman.

Two years after Garcia died of a heart attack, Koltys bought the Marin County house from the musician’s estate and put the fixtures in storage before renovating and reselling it. So while the house may already have a new owner, the fixtures are still waiting for someone to love them.

WELCOME TO THE BIG HOUSE

Nicole Richie shouldn’t expect luxury accommodations even though she will be serving her time in a city jail rather than a county lockup.

Yesterday the rail-thin expectant mother was sentenced to about four days in the slammer for driving under the influence of drugs.

But according to prosecutors, unlike her BFF Paris Hilton, Richie has the choice of spending her time behind bars at any local jail in Los Angeles County that will accept her. What’s more, Richie will be allowed to wear most of her own clothing (no prison stripes for this fashionista), but prosecutors note, anything that might be used as a weapon will be confiscated, including shoelaces, belts, high heels and underwire bras.

It may sound like a step up from what Hilton endured, but it doesn’t mean that the “Simple Life” star will be allowed to chat on her cell phone or order in her favorite take out. (Oh, wait, that shouldn’t be a problem since she doesn’t eat anyway.)

Richie is going to a pay jail, which means for about $75 a day she will have access to a collect-call phone, sleep on a metal bunk with a 2- or 3-inch-thick mattress and eat three prison meals a day (reportedly bologna sandwiches).
