Pop Culture Potpourri: Lending A Hand, Taking A Hand, and Watching A Hand

LENDING A HAND

And you thought he only garnered headlines when he was with Heather Locklear.

It appears there’s more to actor David Spade than most of us realize. According to news reports, the “Rules of Engagement” star recently donated $25,000 to the family of a slain Phoenix police officer.

The 43-year-old comedian and Arizona native told reporters after reading about the police officer’s death last month, he was “hit out of the blue” by the shooting and the fact that the officer had overcome cancer to return to duty.

“It just struck me as such a rough situation just because cops in general get kind of a bad rap lately and people forget it is the scariest job out there,” Spade said.

Spade told reporters he has not met with members of the fallen officer’s family, he simply transferred funds into an existing bank account established for public donations.

“I just thought I would throw something in the pile,” Spade said.

Lat month the Arizona officer was attempting to arrest an illegal immigrant and was gunned down in the process. The murdered officer left behind a wife and two young sons.

TAKING A HAND

In a move that can only be described as completely opposite of his co-star, “Desperate Housewives” actor Ricardo Chavira asked for and took his longtime girlfriend’s hand in marriage.

The extremely low-key nuptials was in stark contrast to the lavish multi-day wedding ceremony that Chavira’s “Desperate Housewives” colleague Eva Longoria hosted in July. Regardless, the actor says he is now a happily married man (unlike his TV character).

Chavira recently told TV’s “Entertainment Tonight” that he and his girlfriend, Marcea Dietzel wed in a private ceremony on September 22nd in San Antonio. The couple’s 4-year-old son, Tomas, acted as best man and ring bearer and Chavira and Dietzel wore pajamas during the ceremony. As for the reception, Chavira says he and his new bride opted to attend their son’s soccer game instead of celebrating at a fancy restaurant.

WATCHING A HAND

Fans of PBS’ “The Woodwright’s Shop”–prepare to be floored by a surprise guest in an upcoming episode.

Mike Easley, North Carolina’s governor is whipping out his tools to show a national audience he knows a thing or two about woodworking. According to network reps, the governor just taped an episode of PBS’ “The Woodwright’s Shop,” last weekend in which he works on a walnut table.

Apparently, the two-term Democratic governor is an accomplished woodworker and hones his skills through a family tradition of creating handmade gifts at Christmas. Easley said last year he and his son made maple tables for the holidays. Word has it the governor left the taping with all of his digits securely in place.
