Pop Culture Potpourri: Rob Lowe Bird Killer, No Indy For Connery and More

ROB LOWE BIRD KILLER

Are you ready for a good laugh?

According to The Des Moines Register, a golf ball hit by actor Rob Lowe during a recent celebrity golf outing struck the Iowa state bird while it was in mid-flight. The paper reports that Lowe was “hitting an approach shot on the fourth hole when his ball hit a goldfinch.” The ball fell about 50 yards short of the green and the bird fell to the ground.

According to witnesses, the rest of the players in the actor’s group laughed and clapped, while Lowe raised his arms and wryly remarked: “That’s my birdie.” Lowe then examined the bird that lay motionless on the ground.

“That’s unbelievable. Who comes here and kills the state bird? Only me,” he said.

Talk about a killer aim.

NO INDY FOR CONNERY

Disappointing news for Sean Connery fans. The legendary actor will not be making an appearance in the new “Indiana Jones” flick. Connery recently told reporters he will not return to give fatherly advice to Harrison Ford’s globetrotting adventurer Indy.

“I thought long and hard about it, and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an ‘Indiana Jones’ film,” Connery said. “It goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun.”

The fourth “Indiana Jones” film will reunite director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas. Shooting on the yet to be titled movie begins this month, and it is scheduled to be in theaters on May 22, 2008.

While Connery has decided against taking part in the film (you’ll recall he played the bookish Henry Jones Sr. in “The Last Crusade”) Lucas announced today that Cate Blanchett, John Hurt and Ray Winstone will be joining the cast, along with Ford and Shia LaBeouf.
