Pop Culture Roundup – January 31, 2010

As I sit here watching the Grammys, I thought I should blog about a few pop culture happenings that occurred this week.

Actor Rip Torn had a bad week as he was arrested for entering a closed bank in Connecticut with a loaded revolver. Police in Salisbury, Conn., where Torn lives, said the actor was highly intoxicated when they arrived, responding to the alarm he set off. The 78 year old, who has recently appeared on NBC’s “30 Rock,” was being held on a $100,000 bond.

Some might say it was a worse week for author J.D. Salinger, as he died on January 27th. But, he did have a good long life –he was 91. He released The Catcher in the Rye in 1951 and seemed to spend most of his time after that trying to run from the fame it brought him. He published his last work in 1965 yet fans never let him forget how great they thought he was.

After boundless rumors of a split (Angelina wants the kids! Brad buys a bachelor bad!), Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were seen together at Saturday night’s Directors Guild of America Awards show looking very, very happy. Brad was there to introduce friend and director Quentin Tarantino. With a trimmed beard (thank goodness), Brad pulled out Angelina’s chair and touched her back as the pair chatted the night away. Sources say it definitely looked like a date.

Caressa Cameron (Miss Virginia) became the latest to be named Miss America. The 22 year old student at Virginia Commonwealth University sang Beyonce’s “Listen” and told kids to get outside and exercise instead of vegetating in front of the television. Okay, she put it in nicer terms – that is what Miss America does! For her win, Cameron gets a $50,000 scholarship, while runner up, Kristy Cavinder (Miss California), gets a $25,000 scholarship.
