It’s just over a week since New Year’s Day, but many people are beginning to feel a sense of let down. After all the build up to the major holidays, all the planning and effort that goes into making everything special, we can end up feeling down when it’s over all too soon.
Add gloomy weather, which is not uncommon this time of year, and some people can even be left feeling a bit depressed. If it’s especially cold and you can’t get out much, you may feel a little stir crazy too. Going quickly from all the excitement of holiday planning and anticipation back to the everyday, can have an impact on our moods.
Recognizing this blue feeling for what it is can help. Understand that it is temporary and will soon pass as other events come along. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. This is also a good time to get out the “to do” list and consider all those projects you’ve been putting off. Beginning a new project can be very uplifting, and finishing one is even more so. The sense of accomplishment often helps improve one’s disposition.
Some people are not as susceptible to post holiday let down and simply see this time of year as a good opportunity to take a well deserved break after all the cooking, cleaning, baking, entertaining, shopping, wrapping, and cleaning up afterward, before schedules begin filling up again.
I guess I feel a little of both. After all the anticipation, I feel like it’s over way too soon. I’d like to spread it out a little longer. Maybe that’s why “undecorating” gives me the urge to redecorate. At the same time, I also like having more time to do other things.
Do you experience post holiday let down or do you relish this time of winding down?
