Pot Luck Wake Up Call

I’ve been a Mormon my whole life, and therefore, I know what a pot luck is. I love a good pot luck. I do. But, it seems like in this day and age, when we know so much more about health, and food, that we should be having a little bit healthier food at our potlucks. Don’t you think?

Every time we have a ward get together it seems we have the same thing…little smokies, small chicken salad sandwiches on white bread, cream cheese roll up surprise, and a fruit plate. Then, let’s not even mention the lots and lots of desserts. Thank goodness for that fruit plate right? I’m sure my ward isn’t any different than hundreds of wards across the country. In fact, my Essential Mormon Cookbook is full of recipes that aren’t that healthy or wholesome either. Is it time for the LDS religion to get a wake up call? I think yes.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love a brownie just like the next guy. And, those cream cheese roll ups are so so yummy. But, I would love just little changes like maybe a green salad with something other than ranch dressing, or some wheat bread, or better yet, HOMEMADE BREAD! I know that mormon women everywhere know how to make bread, right?

But, somehow, I go away from those potluck dinners feeling like I had great conversation and mingling, but not so great food for my body. With the word of wisdom, we know better, but I look around our church buildings on Sunday and we aren’t the most physically fit group in the world by any means. Myself included. Yet, we have the tools to do it.

There are some members who are catching on. Who, know the right way to eat and live. I like learning from them. I am not perfect myself, but I want to be better in the way I eat. Wouldn’t you love to go to a potluck and leave thinking, “I feel fabulous after that meal!” ? I know I would.
