Pro volleyball player Gabrielle Reece formally announced she was pregnant with her second child on NBC’s “Today” show. Not in an interview with Matt Lauer, but rather, at the same time she was telling viewers that she would be appearing on the show as a regular correspondent offering fitness tips for expectant mothers… and, oh, by the way, she made sure to stress that she would be doing so up until her January due date.
Sounds ambitious, doesn’t it? Well, considering that Reece is also still on tour playing pro beach volleyball I suppose anything is possible. Frankly, I can’t believe that Reece is able to keep competing. After all, she is five months pregnant and has the equivalent of volleyball attached to her belly. Still, the pro athlete says her pregnancy is not keeping her from staying on top of her game.
Reece’s husband, pro surfer Laird Hamilton, recently told news reporters that Gabby is “feeling good, training hard, working out like an animal.” And in the process she is putting women like me to shame. Granted, I continued working at my day job (TV news reporter) and exercised at the gym while I was pregnant with my daughter, but by my eighth month I could barely roll out of bed let alone consider hitting a white ball over a net and chasing after it.
Despite her rigorous schedule, Hamilton says Reece is not taking any unneeded risks.
“She gets checked out every week to make sure it’s good – she’s not foolhardy,” Hamilton says of his 37-year-old wife.
When she’s not working out, Reece is running after her almost 4-year-old daughter with Hamilton and thinking of names for the new baby. According to Hamilton, the couple like the names Brodie, Ledge, and Steep. (Do you sense a trend here?)
I have one to add to the list: Volley.
