Prenatal Fitness Classes

Taking a prenatal fitness class can be a great way to stay in shape during your pregnancy. Prenatal classes are geared specifically toward pregnant women. You won’t have to worry about modifying exercises for your pregnant body. In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet other expectant mothers.

Be sure to talk to your doctor before signing up for any prenatal class. While they are safe for most pregnant women, it’s better to get your doctor’s approval since he knows your history and current health status. In addition, some classes require a release from your health care provider before they will let you start attending classes.

Prenatal fitness classes aren’t hard to find. Start by calling your local gym or YMCA. Many of these offer classes for pregnant women. You can also check the yellow pages or search the internet for classes in your area. Ask pregnant friends, your doctor or childbirth educator for recommendations.

There are a variety of prenatal classes to choose from. Many offer a full body workout. Some spend time focusing on preparation for labor. Aerobic, tai chi and yoga classes are the most common prenatal classes offered at most fitness centers.

Talk to the instructor before signing up for the class. This will give you valuable information and help you decide if the class is right for you before you spend any money. Ask about the qualifications and experience of the instructor. Ask if the person is certified to teach prenatal classes. How long has he or she been teaching the class? This will tell you if the instructor has specific knowledge about fitness for pregnant women.

Ask the instructor about the class. What is covered in the classes? Is cardiovascular exercise part of each class? What about flexibility or strength training? Is there a focus on preparing your body for labor? This will help you choose the best class to meet your fitness needs.

Once you have found the perfect class, remember to take it slow. Don’t feel you need to keep up with the instructor from the first class. Remember it’s a process and you will improve with each class. Don’t over do it. If you feel tired or have any pain, take a break. Be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after the workout. Staying hydrated is important for you and your baby. Keep the workout enjoyable. This will keep you motivated and you will be more likely to stick with it.
