Preparation is Key

Regardless of whether you are photographing your favorite four-legged friend or you’re taking aim at your four kids, preparation is key to a successful shoot. Factors, such as lighting, background and camera angles should be considered before you start pressing the shutter button.

Another factor to consider is attire. These days, outfit choice is an issue that is not exclusive to humans only. Dogs and cats have access to a variety of adorable ensembles, from sweaters to slickers, ponchos to pretty dresses. Whether you are taking a picture of your newborn or your fur baby, you want to select clothing that won’t clash with the background of the shot. For example, you don’t want to dress your kids in green colored outfits if your photo session is taking place in a field of green grass, or you’re planning to pose your children near bushes or shrubs.

In addition, if you are planning an outdoor shoot, be sure to check the weather forecast a few days in advance. By doing so, you will be able to adjust your plans if needed. Remember: the more you can check off your to-do list before the shoot, the more time you will have during the photo session to have fun snapping shots.

Speaking of shots, you want to capture a variety of pictures from different angles. The nice part about moving around to document young subjects from unique perspectives is that it will keep your child’s attention longer. If your son or daughter has your moving body to focus on, there is less of a chance that he or she will get bored sitting and posing for the camera. So, don’t be afraid to climb up on a stool and shoot down at your child, or drop to your knees to get close ups of candid facial expressions or snap some full body shots. Take both horizontal and vertical shots, as well as diagonal ones. Finally, don’t worry about overshooting during a photo session. With digital photography, editing and deleting shots is a breeze.
