Prepare for Scripture Study

Have you ever been frustrated with your scripture study? Are there times when you do not see the benefits that scripture study gives you? It may be that you are not preparing yourself for studying the scriptures. It is important to study your scriptures when you are able to absorb what you are reading and that you are in tune with the spirit. Here are four things that you can do to prepare yourself for scripture study.

1) You should study with a purpose. You may be seeking an answer for a specific question you are having in your life, or you may simply want to learn more on a topic or about a period in the scriptures. If you are looking for answers you will be reading more closely and learn more.

2) Prepare an environment that allows you to study effectively. Think back to when you were in school and the number of people who went to the library to study for classes. The quiet, clean environment helped them to focus. You may want to create a corner in your house that is specifically for scripture study. You should be able to completely focus on what you are reading.

3) Be alert when you study. I find that if I study the first fifteen minutes that I wake up or before I go to bed that my scripture study is not as effective. Right after lunch does not work very well either. If I am sleepy my mind wanders too much, and I find that I have to reread the same verses over and over. You know when you can study more effectively.

4) Begin with a prayer. As you pray you can ask that your mind and heart will open so that you may gain the understanding and peace that you seek. It is important to realize that answers do not come all at once. I like to remember Enos and how he wrestled with his prayer. Often understanding and acceptance (yours not the Lord’s) takes time and a great internal struggle.
