Preparing for a Powerful Snowstorm 2

blizzard The snow is falling, and we are all gearing up for a snowstorm that may leave us without power and without an easy way to get out of our driveway. If you missed the first post, click here: Preparing for a Powerful Snowstorm.

We do have a generator (which is also gassed up and ready to go), but we can’t attach it to everything. If we will be without power for more than a few hours, we will attach it to the heat, the well pump and water treatment system, the upright freezer and the refrigerator. This will have our basic needs met and prevent our food from spoiling. Our fireplace could also provide some heat. For cooking, we can unplug the fridge and plug in the microwave or toaster oven. Who knows, we may even pop popcorn in the fireplace.

Of course, we realized that we hadn’t done our weekly Trader Joe’s milk run. We were dreading going out. Partially because we didn’t want to have to compete with all of the panicked people who stock up on milk, eggs and bread, and partially because we didn’t want anyone to think that we were those people. We go through three gallons of milk a week, sometimes more, so no milk in the house could be a disaster.

Before bed, we will probably fill up a bucket or two for the aforementioned toilets, in case we forego the generator but still want to flush.

So, it looks like we are all prepared. The school has already called to cancel school for tomorrow, so the kids can stay up just a little later than usual. The snow has just started to fall again, and we are snuggled in, about to watch a movie. I hope you are comfortable at home tonight as well.
