Preparing for the Storm 2

rainy window (Note, although this post was written yesterday, fluctuating power caused me to make the decision to stay offline and keep my computer safe.)

Have you been watching the weather for today? If you live along the east coast, you’re probably concerned about severe weather coming your way. Heavy rain, high winds and flash floods are all possibilities for many areas.

In my previous post, Preparing for the Storm, I talked a little bit about how the severe weather may be affecting us soon. At the moment, our are resembles a tropical rain forest. There has been some steady, feathery rain with a very warm and humid atmosphere. Usually, it is cool in the mornings here, but not today. The forest is hazy through the mist.

Just as I have been sitting here, things have been changing, though. The sky is getting darker, so much so that I now need to turn on my dining room table light so I can see what I type (the kids had a camp out in the family room/office, so I don’t want to disturb them by working in there). A single bird is optimistically trilling, or perhaps warning, before the storm hits.

When storms are predicted, you generally hear about people running to the store for basics, such as bread, eggs and milk. I’m not really sure why, since in the case of eggs and milk, power loss means no refrigeration. Sometimes for us, it also means no bread, since I make much of it from scratch. We usually have a well-stocked pantry, so we don’t do the last minute runs to the store. The crowds are just not worth it, and we don’t usually have a need. Instead, we focus on things we need to do in particular for where we live.

For example, there is the toilet. To prepare for a storm, I go around the house and make sure they are all flushed (sometimes little ones forget). We also get a bucket ready with water to fill the tanks if needed. One note about this, if you have little ones, make sure the filled buckets can not be reached by young children.

Check back later. I plan to tell you more about our preparations, as well as how we weather the storm.

Stay safe!
