Preparing For Your Own Red Carpet Moment

Do you have a favorite red carpet moment? No, not one you saw on television. I’m talking about an actual, real life red carpet moment, such as a date to the prom, your wedding day, or another occasion when you got dolled up and all eyes were on you.

Personally, I haven’t had too many… and the ones I’ve had weren’t well documented. But alas, such is life. Bottom line: you don’t have to be the reigning queen of Hollywood to be the star of your next high profile event. With a little planning you can make your red carpet moment one to remember by following these simple tips.

Like many brides-to-be I dieted and exercised before my wedding day. However, I wouldn’t recommend beating yourself up if you overindulge at an event leading up to your big day, just add time to your workout. Also, don’t crash-diet before an event, it wreaks havoc on skin. And, frankly, a few pounds around the waist are a lot easier to hide than a face full of blemishes.

Most women known that blinking, tearing and perspiring can destroy eye makeup. My tip: line your eyes with liner, and then go over it with shadow. Also, I always keep blotting papers and a powder compact on hand during high-profile events. After all, shimmer is sexy, shine is oily.

I usually run about 6 miles a day, but because I got married in the morning I didn’t get my run in the day of my wedding. However, I would recommend some last minute body shaping, especially if you are going strapless to your red carpet event. If you can’t go to the gym the day of the event get in a double workout the day before. Also, remember to drink plenty of water… it makes your skin glow. And, this may just be my opinion, but I think a great tan makes a person look 10 pounds lighter. It also makes your teeth look whiter.

Smile–even if you don’t feel like it. Smile. Smile. Smile. Your pictures will look so much better if you do. Here are some smile tips I got from a cosmetic dentist friend of mine after I got my first TV job:

Practice Makes Perfect. If you smile with your teeth slightly parted your smile won’t look forced.

It’s All About the Lips. If your upper lip is full, don’t thin it by smiling too broadly. If your upper lip is thin, smile so that the bottom edges of your upper teeth touch your lower lip. By doing so you will be able to draw attention away from your upper lip.

Lipstick. Bright red lipstick makes white teeth pop. Magenta lipstick makes teeth look more yellow. And, rose, pink or sheer usually doesn’t offer enough contrast.

Vaseline Is Your Friend. If you have a minor defect in your smile (a stain, crack, etc.), apply some petroleum jelly to diffuse it.
