I can’t believe that another year has come for us to do a primary program. Last year, it was the first time I had ever written a primary program. But, this year, I am excited for the program, and can’t wait to see what the kids are going to do.
We started by organizing all of our songs. We are sticking to the songs listed in the outline for the year with just a few changes. Our songs that we are going to sing are:
As a Child of God (which is our new song for the year)
Choose the Right
Stand for the Right
When I am Baptized
Nephi’s Courage
I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus
If the Savior Stood Beside Me
I feel my Savior’s Love
After I get a clear list in my head of the songs we are going to sing, I typically then make a list of our primary children by class.
Before writing any of the program this year, I asked the primary parents if they had saved any talks from the year so far that their children had given in primary. I thought it might be nice to incorporate talks that the children had given so that parents, and the rest of the ward can see and hear them give their talks in the program. This is also a nice way to get the children to write their own parts. Typically, the talk is on a certain subject relevant to that month’s theme, so it is easy to figure out where to fit it into the program. I only had two parents interested in having their children share their previous talks, so the rest of the parts have to be written.
Like last year, I decided to start with the youngest and work my way to the oldest. I have found that the primary outline also builds on itself, so it is a great way to write simpler parts for the younger children, and work up to topics that are more in depth for the older children.
Our primary program will have 19 kids participating this year. It isn’t a lot compared to most primaries, but we are thrilled to be stronger in numbers than last year. I can’t wait for the primary program that is in just a few short weeks. It will be filled with spiritual music, and children sharing their testimonies from the topic that we have learned this year, “Choose The Right”.
