Preparing the Homeschooling Portfolio

In my state I have to fulfill the homeschooling law by having my children either take the standardized test or submit a narrative or portfolio for the year. The portfolio must be seen by a certified teacher and then the teacher signs a form stating it was looked over. I normally have my children take the standardized test but this year I decided to get a teacher evaluation of a portfolio of the year. I made this decision because I have one child going into high school and another who is dyslexic and taking the test would prove next to impossible for her. I was not worried about my oldest taking it, in fact she enjoys it, but I figured it would be nice to get a perspective on what she knew before her transition. Besides, it kept me from having to go to the test center this year.

So what is a homeschool portfolio?

A homeschool portfolio is a window into your child’s homeschool experience, achievements, and academic progress, throughout the school year. There are more then on way to keep a portfolio but I will list the core items you will need. However, always check your state laws, homeschool co-ops, and with the evaluator, on what materials are required.

NOTE: I did not include my letter from the superintendent that excused my children from school attendance for the purpose of home education. You may want to do that or have it handy if asked. I did include the form my state requires to prove a certified teacher reviewed the portfolios.
