Preparing to Become a Stay-at-Home Parent

With a new baby on board, you may be considering becoming a stay-at-home parent. This can be a wonderful new adventure, but are you prepared? Here are some things that you should get in place as soon as possible.

Finances

Will having one parent stay at home change your finances? Now is the time to figure things out including how your budget will change, will you choose one person to take on the financial reins, what is your savings plan and what you will do in the event of a financial emergency.

Don’t forget that staying at home can save money, from work expenses such as a wardrobe and commuting costs, to having time to employ money saving strategies.

Don’t forget all of that baby gear. it is easy to get caught up on all of the cute things, but you should really sit down and determine what it is that you really need.

Social Network

Being a stay-at-home parent can be a very lonely and isolating job, especially when you are new to being at home. While you may want to spend every minute with your little one, you also need the socialization and support of other adults in your life.

Establish a social network of people that you can interact with during the day. Of course you may need to include your baby. Check out the International Moms Club or MOPS International (christian organization) for a local chapter, find out if your hospital offers a new mom meet up. Just getting out in the neighborhood for walks or to the park may bring you in contact with a new social group. And if you are a dad, don’t be intimidated by all of the mom groups. Many also accept dads, or you can always start your own group!
