This list includes the final but important steps that you will want to complete a week or two before you move. These steps will help your transition to a new home go smoothly.
1) Call and have all of your utilities turned off at your old home. You can put in your request a week or two before you go. You may want to give yourself an extra day, so that you if you are delayed it won’t affect you negatively.
2) Call and have all of your utilities turned on for you at your new home. You may want to schedule the start date a day or two in advance, just in case the utility company gets backed up. (This has happened to me; fortunately it was our phone, and not our power.)
3) Fill out a change of address form with the post office. You can either complete a form to mail in or do it online.
4) Change your address at your bank and other financial institutions. This includes student loans, credit cards, and with your financial advisor. If you are moving out of state you will most likely not want to close your accounts until you have had several weeks of inactivity. Then you simply write a letter to the bank requesting the account be closed, and the remaining funds be mailed to you.
5) Call your doctor and complete the paperwork you need to have your records transferred. You may have to pay a small fee to have them transferred, but I’ve never had to pay when I inform them it is because I am moving.
6) You will want to have childcare in place as soon as you move. Make sure that you have the necessary form needed to enroll your child in a daycare. You will need a form that states that the child has had physical in the last year, and the shot records from your doctor.
7) You can call all your magazine subscriptions and change your address with them. You may also want to do this with online accounts such as Netflix.
8) You will want to call your insurance company and inform them of your address change. It may be that your rates drop because you live in a safer area. If you are moving out of state you may need to find a new insurance agent.
9) Call and confirm your rental truck. This is very important, you don’t want to get lost in the shuffle and not be able to move on time.
10) Call and confirm your move in/closing date with your mortgage firm or realtor. If you are moving into an apartment call the office and make sure that the date is correct.
