Preparing Your Home for the Colder Months

Depending on where you live in the United States, you may be starting to think about preparing your home for the colder months to come. I live in Wisconsin and by September we are already thinking of snow. It has been known to snow in October so you can never be too prepared.

This is the time when we like to take advantage of what could be the last month or so of decent weather. By the middle of September we are packing away most of our outdoor furniture and making sure the snow blower and shovels are handy.

There are other ways that you can prepare your home for the colder months. Clean out the gutters, wash the outside of your windows, put away your gardening hose, turn off the outside faucets, insulate areas of the house that need it, weather-seal your windows and replace all of the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

What about repairs that you have been putting off? Cracked or peeling paint on the outside of your house should be fixed. It’s also a great time to check your chimney and roof for any issues that could arise.

You should also have your furnace checked before the colder weather sets in. You don’t want to run into a problem in the middle of winter. At the very least, change your furnace filter.

You might also want to think about ways that you can save money this upcoming winter. It might be time to insulate the attic or install new windows. You might think about a draft guard for your doors.

By taking the time now to prepare your home for the colder months you will be ready for whatever old man winter brings your way. It is never too early to plan for those long, cold days ahead.
