shopping cart If you are in the path of Hurricane Sandy, the Frankenstorm as many are calling it, then hopefully you are safe and secure and well prepared. My home is right in the path of the storm, and we are just a few minutes away from landfall of this historic hurricane. I’ll keeping writing as long as I have power or until the time that I have to take further action. The wind is definitely picking up to scary proportions.

While we aren’t too concerned about flooding of our home, except for maybe some water in the basement, we are concerned about trees and power lines falling. At the moment, we do have some branches across our cable line leading from our home, but that is the worst so far, thank God. We will see what happens when we get the worst of the storm.

Now that are preparation is done, I have some tips for all of you on how to do your prepping inexpensively. You’ll save the most money when you prepare for a hurricane or other weather phenomena before it happens. You also won’t have to deal with empty shelves.

If you can afford a generator, purchase one during the summer, when the prices will be the lowest.

Fill your bathtub to have extra water for flushing and cleaning, saving you from buying extra water for those purposes. Also, fill up empty water bottles for drinking water.

Save gallon milk containers and fill them three-quarters of the way with water and then freeze. Not only will they help keep your food cooler longer (you can transfer some of them to the fridge as needed, but you will also have extra water to use.

Boil water and fill a thermos or two with it. You can use the hot water to make instant soup or oatmeal, inexpensive but filling food.

Buy extra blankets and sheets at your local thrift store, to help keep warm if you lose heat.

Use coupons to stock up on items that are important for prepping, including baby wipes, canned soup, crackers, bottled water and more.
