Prepping for Your Baby Bump Shoot

The beginning of the new year is when many professional photographers offer super savings on portrait packages, including sessions for expectant mothers. Since most families take photos during the holidays, studios need to come up with deals to attract customers.

If you are planning to give birth in the spring, now is one of the best times to take advantage of drastically reduced portrait packages. As I mentioned in a previous blog, photo sessions for expectant moms are extremely popular these days. However, in order to make the most of your shoot you’ll want to keep the following tips in mind:

Wardrobe: Regardless of how good you look in hot pink, you may not want to sport the color for pregnancy portraits. Rather, you are better off sticking with more subdued colors, such as black, white, blue or other neutral tones.

Go Natural: Just because you are booking a photo session, doesn’t mean you have to be confined to a studio. Consult with your photographer about getting some shots taken in the great outdoors. It is possible to shoot maternity photos with nature as the background; though, be careful that your surroundings don’t take away from the focus of the photo–your pregnant belly.

Original Poses: Don’t be afraid to experiment with creative poses. This may be the perfect opportunity to include other family members in the photos. For example, you could take a cute photo of your older children kissing your pregnant belly or have your baby’s father cradle your bulging stomach. Other memorable poses include having your other children place their hands on your belly or your partner embracing you from behind while you place your arms around your stomach.

Props: If you don’t feel comfortable posing in front of a camera with your stomach exposed, then consider including some props in your shot. Teddy bears, baby blankets or booties are great additions to pregnancy pictures.
