Preschool Math: Dominos and Dice

Math comes naturally. You will be surprised to see that your child already understands the concepts behind addition and subtraction. It is fun to watch them learn and come to realize that the number of cookies they can eat corresponds with numerals.

Dominos:

Addition: Grab a domino and use the top one as the top number and the bottom number as the bottom number on your equation. If you have foam numbers or another type of number manipulative like felt or even a flashcard have your child match the numbers to the “dots’ on the dominos. Then have you child solve the equation. As your child is able to write have her write the equation from the domino.

Subtraction: When using dominos for subtraction at this level make sure the larger number is on top to avoid negatives. Use any number manipulatives you have or number lines and have your child recognize which number corresponds with the number of dots on the domino. Using buttons, pencils or counting bears have your child count out the larger number and then remove the amount suggested on the domino for the smaller number. If your child can write her number then allow her to write the equation to connect the concepts.

Dice:

Addition: Have your child roll two dice or just one. If using one she will have to roll that one twice. Have your child write down the number that corresponds with the number of dots on the dye or use a foam number to represent it. Then roll again or use the second dye rolled and do the same thing. Basically you are rolling to plug numbers into your addition equation. Then solve.

Subtraction: Using two dice or rolling one dye twice roll to find the numbers to plug into the subtraction problem. Have the child write the numbers down or use foam numbers to make the equation. Then solve.
