Preschool Pick: Bob Books

Setting a child off on the right path to reading is an important step.  There are many resources on the market today to help with this new adventure into literacy.  Much of what you will find will be solid but one of my all time favorites is the Bob Books series.   These little books are simple but quite effective teaching materials.  Each set of Bob Books come with a dozen small paperback books which slowly build upon one another.

I was first introduced to Bob Books about ten years ago when I began to teach my oldest how to read.  She loved the little books and quickly fell in love with Mat, Sam, and Dot.  The funny little pencil drawn characters were perfect little teachers.  Each book starts out by focusing on a simple sound and slowly builds throughout the set with reinforcement and new sounds. Each story is short and each page gives picture clues making for  encouraging little victories.  I love the confidence these books build in beginning readers.

Bob Books continue to be a staple in my homeschool.  I still have that same set I originally bought ten years ago.  My son has gone through them and now my little daughters will be using them.  My 7 year old is dyslexic and she did very well using Bob Books.

If you enjoy the books you and your child may enjoy the iPhone and iPad Bob Book app.  The full app costs $3.99 but you can try the Bob Books Lite app for free.  The app brings back the delightful characters from the books.  The app focuses on making the connection between letters and sounds.  It also focuses on spelling the words your child knows from the books.

Due to the proven teaching method, solid foundation, and effectiveness, make it a preschool pick!
