The passing of our beloved prophet Gordon B. Hinckley has affected all of us deeply. We remember him with fondness, his sense of humor, his unerring commitment to the right, his dedication to the Church through years and years of service.
The magazine staff at the Ensign has put together another special way to commemorate the life and accomplishments of this wonderful man. Included with the Ensign this month was a smaller magazine entitled, “In Memoriam: President Gordon B. Hinckley.”
The first page of the supplement tells us of the young Gordon’s introduction into Church service. Immediately after returning from his mission to England, he was called into the office of then-president Heber J. Grant. Elder Hinckley had done a wonderful job promoting the good name of the Church while on his mission, and this talent was to be put to use. In this year, 1935, he was to begin his life-long career for the Church, beginning with the assignment of secretary for the Radio, Publicity, and Mission Literature Committee.
We learn of his home and upbringing. Born in 1910 to parents to loved to read and filled the house with books, Gordon grew up well-read and well-educated. He was not a very healthy boy, though – something that is hard to believe, given the vigor with which he lived out the remainder of his life.
The magazine shows pictures of President Hinckley with his children and grandchildren. It tells the story of how he met his beloved wife, Marjorie. We read about his call to the apostleship, to the First Presidency, and then to the office of President and prophet. There are loving quotes from members all around the world as they reflect on the man he was. Pictures of him were drawn by children and included as well.
The last portion of the booklet contains transcripts of the talks given at the funeral, so we can have these touching words to refer to, time and again.
I have loved Gordon B. Hinckley so dearly during his time as our prophet. I miss him, but I know that he is with his darling wife again. How much he has impacted all of our lives. What a tremendous man and true servant of God.
