“Presidents Day” Sales are a Misnomer

You all do know that there’s not really a Presidents Day holiday, don’t you? What most people are celebrating is Washington’s Birthday. Washington was born on February 22nd. He’s a hero, and not just because we live in Washington state. He is one that is truly worthy of a day of honor. Not every president (especially some in recent history!) is due such recognition.

In 1968, Congress moved Washington’s birthday celebration to the third Monday in February, regardless of the date that it fell on. This was done in part to simplify holiday schedules for Federal employees. Prior to this, most people celebrated both Lincoln‘s birthday (the 12th) and Washington’s birthday (the 22nd). Richard Nixon issued a presidential proclamation that combined the two into “Presidents Day”, and said that it was a day to honor all presidents. A proclamation is not law; he might as well have said it was Howdy Doody day. Today we celebrate WASHINGTON’s birthday.

Of course, it seems that most of the retail industry hasn’t read their history books. As such, here’s a partial list of some of the better President’s Day…er, Washington’s Birthday online sales events:
