Preventing Falls and Fractures

Once you reach your forties and fifties, your body’s bone production slows down. You may be starting to lose more bone than you are regrowing! If your bone density is decreasing, you are at risk for serious injuries from a simple fall. So what can you do to prevent falls and fractures?

  • In the bathroom: use a rubber bath mat in the shower or tub. Install grab bars in the shower or tub to help you get in and out safely. Pick non-skid bath mats. Soak up extra water outside the tub or shower so you don’t slip.
  • Around the house: keep floors free of clutter. Get rid of throw rugs that may cause you to trip. Make sure all carpets are firmly secured in place. Keep hallways and rooms well-lit. Install handrails in hallways.
  • Make sure you can see and hear well! Wear your glasses. Use a hearing aid. Not sure if your vision and hearing is up to snuff? Get checked every year.
  • Use nightlights to help you see where you’re going after dark.
  • Use a cane or walker if you are unsteady on your feet.
  • Wear low-heeled shoes with rubber soles for grip and stability.
  • Don’t rush! Don’t run to answer the phone — no call is worth risking a broken hip. Don’t run to answer the door. Take your time and move around safely.
  • Be aware of pets when you’re on the move. A cat or dog underfoot can send you sprawling.
  • Be aware of young children when you’re on the move! You may want to greet enthusiastic family members while seated, rather than on your feet.
  • Exercise! Not only will regular exercise help strengthen your muscles; it can help improve your balance and coordination.

Osteoporosis may require that you make some changes around the house, but wouldn’t you rather make a few cosmetic changes than spend time in the hospital with a serious fracture?
