Primary Time: Bringing the Scripture Stories to Life for Your Children

Do you want your children to really learn the scriptures? The summer is a great time to spend some extra time teaching your children the scripture stories. If you plan well you can really bring the stories to life. You can focus on one or two stories a week. It is important that while you do any of the following suggestions you still take the time to talk about the concept the story is teaching us.

1) The easiest way to teach your children the stories from the scriptures is to tell them the stories. You can use the scripture readers, pictures from the Gospel Art Kit or flannel board figures from “The Friend.” In fact when you first introduce the story to your children, just sitting down and telling them the story is great. If you have older children you may want to read the story from the scriptures together.

2) After your children hear the story, have them illustrate the story. This would be a fun keepsake for your children, as they grow older. You can easily gather the pictures together and write the story at the bottom of each page. Then you combine the pages for the book. You may want to have a three-ring-binder for each of your children.

3) Another way to bring the stories to life is to act them out. You can provide costumes for your children to dress up in. You can direct the story or sit back and watch. You can easily take this a step farther and have your family act out the stories for family home evening.

4) You can complete a craft to go along with each story. For example when you tell the story of Noah and the Ark, you could build a boat out of Popsicle sticks or make animal puppets. If you are learning about Nephi and his journey in the wilderness you may want to make a Liahona. If you are learning about Daniel and the Lion’s Den you can make a lion.
